Close up detail of a 1951 Sun Super Vitesse
1951 Sun Super Vitesse build, completed in spring 2017

A 1951 Birmingham built Sun at the F C Parkes works at Aston Brook Road

This was a build carried out during 2017. The cycle was purchased from Wales in December 2016 for 100, as a frame and forks only. The rare clip type headset and Chater Lea BB were still in place. A remarkable condition frame for its age, it still carries its original decals as well as box lining. The 22" 531 plain tubed frame has been rebuilt into a fine little 26" wheeled tourer, with a mixture of contemporary, modern and 50s, 60s and 70s parts. It rides superbly on 26 x 1-3/8" Schawlbe Delta Cruiser tyres, running on modern alloy rims. A 70s Huret 5-speed system keep the little machine going over the Plymouth hills. 50s GB brake and levers add a period touch, whilst a well loved Brooks B17 provides essential period comfort. A fine pair of 1950s Bantel 'Star' guards help keep my feet and backside dry! The chrome forks are totally original. These machines would originally have been 3-speeders, and indeed I have another Vitesse waiting in the wings to get a little lovin'.
