Carlton Cycles/3

The Carlton cycles illustrated here show the revamped graphics, which were 'waterslide' decal type which easily rubbed off from the cross bar. The Continental, Corsa and Criterium all suffered from name loss! The 'Ten', 'Cobra', 'Kermesse' and 'Equipe' models all retained a mixture of graphics as from previous catalogue. The next change with regard to graphics came in about 1977 - when much simpler, bolder and plainer rounded block lettering was used. 

By then the company was relocated to Ilkston where handbuilt cycles were still made but the range as a whole was more Raleigh than true Carlton - some gems were still made but the Carlton name was seen as diluting the Raleigh brand. By the late 1970s or early 80s even the classic rider on a bike headbadge was now no more than a foil sticker. 

A company which for most of its existence under Raleigh had enjoyed pretty much a great degree of autonomy was slowing dying due to a mixture of of downturns in the market and poor support from Raleigh, Im sure some would disagree.
