The Carlton Flyer

This machine was purchased in 2005 as a frame and set of forks only. It was my aim to rebuild into a classic lightweight touring machine, worthy of the accolades which were bestowed upon the Worksop Company's finest handbuilt machines.

 

The refurbishment has been going for nearly 3 years, although the cycle has been in a rideable state for nearly two. I am always on the look out for period parts for it. I am currently looking for a pair of brake cable end ferrules to fit the GB Arret hoods...

 

The Flyer has  22" frame made from Reyolds '531' tubing. It has 'Carlton lugs', possibly Oscar-egg type (ideas anyone?). The frame number dates it to 1964. I have attempted to put all that is the best into this machine, hence you will find Campagnolo components throughout, GB brakes, Brooks saddle, Carradice saddle bag and Bluemels lightweight mudgaurds. A few concessions to modernity are the Campag Veloce chainset and sealed Campag bottom bracket bearings. A Gran Sport chainset will probably ulimately be fitted.

 

With all the components fitted the machine still weights in at a respectible sub-20lbs. The machine handles well and the gearing using a 42/52 chainset with 22-tooth rear spocket is fine for me.
